Which Casino Games Have Lower House Edges? A Rules-Based Comparison

Compare roulette, baccarat, blackjack and video poker by the rules and decisions that determine expected loss—not by promises of guaranteed wins.

Which Casino Games Have Lower House Edges? A Rules-Based Comparison

A meaningful comparison of casino games starts with the wager and its rules. A game name alone is insufficient. Two blackjack tables can have different payouts and decisions; roulette can have one or two zeros; a baccarat side bet is not the same proposition as the main Banker wager.

House edge describes expected loss relative to a defined betting unit. It is not the chance of losing the next round and it is not a forecast of your account balance after an evening. Wizard of Odds explains why the denominator matters, particularly when a game involves additional compulsory or optional wagers.

Roulette: an exact calculation with visible assumptions

Consider an ordinary straight-up wager on a fair single-zero wheel. There are 37 pockets. With the standard 35:1 profit payout, a €1 wager wins €35 with probability 1/37 and loses €1 with probability 36/37. Its expected profit is (35 āˆ’ 36)/37, or approximately āˆ’ā‚¬0.02703.

The corresponding house edge is about 2.70%. With 38 pockets and the same payout, it becomes 2/38, approximately 5.26%. These calculations assume the stated wheel and payout; special rules, multipliers and different bet types need their own analysis. The underlying rules are explained in the roulette guide.

Covering more numbers changes how often a bet wins, but does not automatically improve its expected return. It may simply divide a larger total stake among more outcomes.

Baccarat: specify the bet and the commission rule

Standard commission baccarat pays winning Banker wagers at 0.95:1 after a 5% commission. Under the conventional eight-deck rules, the main Banker wager has a house edge of approximately 1.06%, while Player is approximately 1.24%. Those figures do not apply to every no-commission variant or to side bets. The baccarat analysis describes the underlying probabilities.

The commission is charged on winning profit, not on every wager. A €20 Banker win earns €19 profit under the stated rule. A no-commission label can replace that deduction with a reduced payout on a particular outcome; it is not necessarily a better deal.

Blackjack: decisions are part of the price

There is no single honest blackjack percentage that covers every table and every player. Deck count, blackjack payout, dealer soft-17 rule, doubling and splitting permissions all matter. A low theoretical house edge typically assumes appropriate basic strategy for that exact ruleset.

A natural blackjack paying 3:2 yields €15 profit on a €10 wager; 6:5 yields €12. That €3 difference on each qualifying natural is a rule change, not a cosmetic feature. The blackjack rules guide provides the context for checking payouts and decisions before play.

Video poker: the paytable must be identified

Video poker combines a payout schedule with decisions about which cards to hold. A quoted return is meaningful only alongside the exact paytable and an appropriate strategy. A title such as ā€œJacks or Betterā€ is not enough to identify a version. Do not assume that an attractive headline percentage applies to the machine displayed by an operator.

For an unfamiliar game, record the complete payout table before consulting an analysis. If you cannot establish the rules and assumptions, leave its numerical ranking unresolved rather than inventing a position.

Compare expected cost, not just percentages

For a hypothetical game with a 2% edge, €500 of total wagering corresponds to €10 of expected loss. A game with a 1% edge but €2,000 of wagering corresponds to €20. These are arithmetic expectations under constant assumptions, not promises about either session.

Stake size, pace and additional wagers can therefore matter as much as the headline edge. A lower-edge game can still consume more money if it encourages much greater turnover. Keep the spending boundary separate from the mathematical comparison.

How to build your own shortlist

Write down the exact wager, payout rules, strategy assumption and source date. Check that the displayed game matches the analysed version. Treat side bets as separate products, and avoid merging estimates based on incompatible denominators. The defensible result is a comparison of identifiable rulesets—not a universal list of games that ā€œmake you winā€.
